Success Stories: University of Toronto — Faculty of Dentistry
The University of Toronto is Canada's largest university, with over 70,000 students. Its Faculty of Dentistry is the largest and oldest dental school in Canada. The faculty is looking to leverage technology and the Internet to complement its traditional teaching methods in order to add to the overall student learning experience.
Objectives and Requirements
The Faculty of Dentistry wished to establish online tutorials for second year dentistry students in order to facilitate the review of important course material outside of class. These tutorials were designed to both help students review material already covered in lectures and teach supplemental subject matter.
Solution
Facing a limited budget and restricted technical resources, the faculty opted to utilize Mindspring as its tutorial platform. Teaching assistants had the courses online quickly and without difficulty, and students were able to access interactive tutorials at any time of day.
Results
Students now have an invaluable tool to review and supplement material taught in lectures. The new study modules, delivered via the Mindspring platform, have led to favourable reviews by students, and there has been a noticeable positive correlation between system (tutorial) access and grades received. Tutorials were subsequently expanded for both third year students and exchange students, and were made available to graduate students as well, through the university library. Mindspring has been featured at the university's Innovative Teaching and Technology Showcase.
